Seven seek Newfoundland Liberal leadership two months before election

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Seven people are vying for the leadership of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Liberal party, two months before the province’s election.

An abbreviated nomination process closed at noon today in the wake of Yvonne Jones’s resignation earlier this week for health reasons.

The candidates include former provincial cabinet minister Kevin Aylward, businessman Brad Cabana, lawyer Bernard Coffey, former provincial member Danny Dumaresque, Ryan Lane, Rodney Martin and Charles Murphy.

Party president Judy Morrow says an executive board will consult with party members over the weekend before interviewing the candidates and choosing Jones’s successor on Sunday.

The election is set for Oct. 11.
