EDMONTON – A woman was flown to hospital in critical condition after hitting a moose on Highway 63 near Mariana Lakes early Monday morning.
The vehicle was travelling north and is believed to have hit the moose on the inside lane of a passing section before veering off into the ditch.
The woman was the only person involved in the crash and her car was severely damaged.
Witnesses performed first aid before she was airlifted to an Edmonton area hospital.
A second vehicle ran over the moose, but no one else was injured.
Highway 63 was closed for about two hours while emergency crews worked to rescue the woman and investigate the crash.
The RCMP continues to investigate the collision. Speed and drugs have not been ruled out as factors, but alcohol and road conditions are not considered to have played a role.
