Heavy rain causes flooding in Vaughan

VAUGHAN, Ont. – York Regional Police are warning motorists to avoid a number of areas in Vaughan, after heavy rain caused roads to flood.

Several cars are submerged under water at Rivermede Road and Bowes Road. Hydro poles are also reportedly down in the area.

Police say other traffic problem areas are Highway 7 West and Edgeley Boulevard, Highway 7 West and Interchange Way, and Rivermede Road and Keele Street.

Residents are also being reminded to treat all non-functioning traffic lights as four-way stops until the problems have been resolved.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement saying the heavy rains over southern Ontario will spread into Eastern Ontario this afternoon.

Rainfall amounts of 25 to 40 millimetres are expected over most regions.

Authorities say that during the heavy rainfall, lakes and streams will be flowing higher than normal, especially near culverts and bridges. People are reminded to stay away from rivers and streams.
