Canada’s Dubois, Wozniak into second round at Odlum Brown Van Open

VANCOUVER – Canada’s Stephanie Dubois and Aleksandra Wozniak each advanced to the second round of the US$200,000 Odlum Brown Van Open on Wednesday.

Dubois, from Laval, Que., defeated Yaraslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan 6-4, 6-0 to move on.

In the late game, Wozniak, from Blainville, Que., downed Britain’s Laura Robson 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Toronto natives Heidi El Tabakh and Sharon Fichman were both eliminated along with Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que.

El Tabakh lost 7-5, 6-2 to Australia’s Casey Dellacqua, Fichman fell to Israel’s Julia Glushko 6-3, 6-4 and Bouchard lost to Julia Cohen of the United States 7-5, 6-4.

In other results, Britain’s Anne Keothavong defeated Ling Zhang of Hong Kong 6-4, 6-1; Irina Falconi of the U.S., beat Germany’s Kathrin Woerle 6-1, 5-7, 6-1; Arina Rodionova of Russia edged American Gail Brodsky 3-6, 6-4, 7-5; Australia’s Olivia Rogowska upset fifth-seeded Misaki Doi of Japan 3-6, 6-4, 6-1; and Urszula Radwanska of Poland downed American Madison Brengle 6-3, 6-3.

In men’s singles, Montreal’s Erik Chvojka failed to advance to the third round with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 loss to Britain’s James Ward.

Top-seeded Yen-Hsun Lu of Taipei was eliminated by Britain’s Alex Bogdanovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, Bobby Reynolds of the United States defeated Luca Gregorc of Slovenia 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, and France’s Clement Reix moved on with a 4-6, 6-3 7-6 (9) victory over South Africa’s Fritz Wolmarans.

In men’s doubles, Chvojka and American partner Greg Ouellette advanced to the second round after Moldava’s Roman Borvanov and Michael Venus of the U.S., withdrew because of injury.

They’ll be joined by Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., and Reynolds, who also advanced with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 win over Kamil Pajkowski of Burnaby, B.C., and Peter Aarts of the U.S.

In women’s doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and American Lena Litvak were defeated 2-6, 6-1, 10-7 by Karolina Pliskova and Kristyna Pliskova, who are both from the Czech Republic.
