Remote B.C. campsite closed as bear makes smorgasbord of campers’ supplies

VICTORIA – A remote Vancouver Island beach popular with surfers is also popular with one very persistent black bear.

Two wilderness campsites at Sombrio Beach, 57 kilometres west of Sooke, in Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, have been closed while officials try to snare the hungry bruin.

No one has been hurt, but campers say the bear has stealing food for days.

James Younger says the creature made off with some of his groceries before he even had time to cache the apples and carrots in a tree.

Another camper says the bear climbed into the back of his pickup to munch on food stored there.

A trap has now been set in hopes of catching, and possibly relocating, the bear. (CFAX)
