SIU clears Cornwall officer in collision that injured man on motorcycle

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Ontario’s police watchdog has cleared an officer in Cornwall, Ont., who was involved in a collision that injured a motorcycle rider.

The Special Investigations Unit says it happened when the officer was on the way to the scene of fatal collision June 6, with emergency equipment activated.

The officer was driving westbound and moved into the eastbound lane because westbound traffic was stopped as he approached the accident scene.

The SIU says 43-year-old Michael Fritz, of Cornwall, was in the stopped traffic and moved into the eastbound lane to make a U-turn when he was struck by the police cruiser, which was unable to stop in time.

Fritz suffered a broken leg in the collision.

SIU director Ian Scott says the officer was acting lawfully and cannot be held criminally responsible for the collision.
