Councillor pushes to legalize secondary suites in more Calgary communities

CALGARY- A new push is underway to legalize secondary suites in more areas of the city, in light of the housing crunch.

Councillor Druh Farrell plans to present a notice of motion on June 9, to legalize suites in Wards 7, 8, 9 and 11. Those are mostly high-density, inner-city areas, and spots where councillors have always supported such developments.

Farrell is also looking to allow suites in homes that are within 600 metres of primary transit, saying it may be a way to show council the idea can work well here.

“Moving forward, incrementally it can show they are not scary, they can provide a lot of benefits,” she said. “They can enhance a neighbourhood and perhaps the opposition will go away in other areas. We will see.”

Other benefits include giving homeowners a second income, and potentially drive out dangerous illegal suites. The motion will also ask the city to explore parking solutions on crowded streets.
