EDMONTON – Residents of a northeast Edmonton apartment building were forced from their homes early Sunday morning after a fire broke out in a fourth floor suite.
Edmonton Fire Rescue crews were called to Huntington Place apartments, located at 5425- 144 B Avenue, shortly after 2:30 a.m.
“When the first crews arrived they found smoke and fire in a fourth floor suite on the north end of the building,” explains District Chief John Bower with Edmonton Fire Rescue.
Due to the size of the building, a second alarm was called shortly after.
The 49-suite building was evacuated and ETS buses were brought in to temporarily shelter the nearly 120 residents who live in the building.
Bower says EMS crews assessed one elderly lady, but she was released. No other injuries were reported.
The fire was brought under control around 4 a.m. Bower says the situation could have been much worse.
Bower says Edmonton Social Services has been called in to assist the displaced residents.
The fire was contained to one suite. The damage estimate is not known at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
