This urban-rural riding spans the entire Niagara peninsula, spanning from the U.S. border on the east and Thorold Townline and Holloway Bay roads to the west.

The NDP won this seat in a by-election earlier in 2014, with Niagara Falls city councillor Wayne Gates defeating Progressive Conservative candidate Bart Maves by just under 1,000 votes. The Liberals, who had held the seat since 2003 under Kim Craitor, finished well back with 19.4 per cent of the vote. In previous elections, the Liberals had done well in Niagara Falls; the PCs everywhere else.

By the numbers

The median age of 43.7 is 12th highest in southern Ontario. Twenty-four per cent of people identified as second generation Canadians in the 2011 census, the second largest number in Ontario outside the GTA.
