Edmonton to get 440 affordable housing units

About $38 million in federal and provincial funding will be shared among five Edmonton-area projects expected to create 440 new affordable housing units.

The funding includes $8.9 million to build 80 units at the Norwood Village Apartments, $9.9 million for 103 units at Schonsee Apartments and $8.3 million for 90 units for aboriginal seniors and people with disabilities at Boyle Renaissance Phase II.

The money comes from previously announced funding under the federal government’s Economic Action Plan and the province’s Affordable Housing Initiative.

“New construction projects are a great way to stimulate our economy and put Albertans to work,” said MP Rob Anders said Thursday in a statement following the official announcement in Calgary. “These will make a real and lasting difference in our communities, improving access to affordable housing and offering a better quality of life for our residents.”

Anders announced a total of almost $90 million for 12 affordable housing projects across the province. Together, the projects will create more than 800 new housing units.

Besides the three Edmonton projects, $6.2 million will go to create 65 units in Beaumont, and $9.5 million will help create 103 units in Spruce Grove.

The announcement helps the province inch closer to its goal of creating 11,000 new units for low-income and homeless Albertans. More than 10,800 units have been created over the first four years of the strategy, the province said.
