The province is moving ahead with phase two of its plan to upgrade the Malahat and help make the often dangerous stretch of road safer for drivers.
The second phase of safety improvements will include widening the highway and installing 2.3 km worth of median barrier between Shawnigan Lake Road north to the Malahat Summit.

The upgrades will improve safety in an area locals refer to as “NASCAR Corner.”
Work will begin this May and wrap up next Spring.
Once this phase is complete, over 50 per cent of the highway will have a median barrier.
The provincial government says a total of $33 million has been spent on improving the Malahat Highway since 2001.
22,000 motorists use the highway every day between Victoria and Duncan.
