EDMONTON – Sections of the town of Peace River were placed under a voluntary evacuation order Tuesday night as water flooded areas of the community.

Peace River Mayor Tom Tarpey said 15 to 20 businesses in the downtown core were affected after a creek overflowed.
A section of Highway 744 was also closed.

“We’re going to watch the melt. We feel the blockage seemed to give way during the night, and we were able to re-establish the flow of Pat’s Creek culvert out to the Peace River itself. It seems to be flowing well,” explained Tarpey.

The mayor said standing pools of water remained in parts of the town Wednesday morning but water was receding.
Highway 744 was re-opened Wednesday morning.
Crews were working on the clean up.
