Dignitaries gathered in Saskatoon Friday morning to turn the sod at the site where the city’s new police station will be built.

The new headquarters will be located on the 25th Street location.

Police have long outgrown the current station and are having to lease office space around the city at a cost of $1-million a year.

Some of the features of the new building include a technical forensics lab, community room, indoor firing range, parking and a gym.

The new building will also house a small memorial to missing and murdered women.

“The memorial will be a place for reflection for grieving families and the public,” said Saskatoon Police Service Chief Clive Weighill.

“It will also serve as a beginning and end point for marches or rallies to keep public awareness alive on this important issue.”

The new facility will be able to accommodate 800 service members. Currently, 650 staff are working out of 9 locations around the city.

The new headquarters is scheduled to open in late 2013 at a cost of $122-million.
