Mystery of disappearing lake solved

Earlier, CHBC News reported on a small Kelowna lake that was shrinking at an alarming rate.

Concerned local residents could see that the lake level of Frazer Lake in East Kelowna was dropping with every passing day but they didn’t know what was happening to the water or who was responsible.

Well now the mystery of the disappearing lake has been solved.

Frazer Lake is part of the South Okanagan Mission Irrigation District, which provides water to a handful of agricultural users.

Most of the water used by the district comes from wells.

The lake is basically a back-up system that is used to store water in case of drought.

Water is released from the lake through a small dam that has often been the target of vandals.

Greg Kuipers from the South Okanagan Mission Irrigation District says someone damaged a valve on top of the dam, most likely thinking the lake wouldn’t be drained down.

However, he says that thinking was misguided.

The district fills the lake up with well water twice a year through the same valve that was vandalized.

Kuipers says when he realized the lake level was dropping he repaired the valve and turned on the pumps.

It will take between seven to ten days before the lake is once again at full pool.
