HUDSON – It isn’t often you hear the words ‘erotic massage oil’ and ‘charity’ used in the same sentence, but frequently community events bring together diverse stakeholders. And Fantasia, a company specializing in massage oils and sex toys, had its booth set up right next to cosmetics companies and mom-and-pop candy makers.
Veronica Kelly, the Fantasia representative at the first Community Wings Vendor Fair, said families need not worry – the racier items are stashed out of sight of children.
As she demonstrated the contents of the ‘box of orgasms,’ she reminded a reporter that a portion of the sales were going to help needy families through Community Wings.
“I’m hoping we raise money in the thousands,” she said. “Hopefully it’ll be a good turnout.”
Braving thick snow that clogged the roads, supporters of Community Wings managed to pull off a market-style charity event aimed at raising thousands of dollars in a day for needy families in the western Montreal area.
“The West Island, Vaudreuil, Monteregie, Montreal, and they have come and offered their services,” said Selina Richard, the organization’s president. “And a portion of their sales are going to be donated to Community Wings.”
About a dozen merchants sold their wares in a community centre in Hudson. Social media had an instrumental role in organizing the event.
“That’s pretty much how we got together,” said Carol Choquette, of Mary Kay. “We’re a bunch of folks who got together on Facebook, there are a lot of community pages and small businesses.”
A wide range of businesses came out. Some were independently owned small businesses, like Heidi Moewius’ gourmet custom chocolate business. Others, like Mary Kay, were part of major multinational corporations.
Community Wings is holding its next event– a silent auction – in Vaudreuil on April 12.
