RCMP to get civilian oversight in B.C.

VICTORIA – The B.C. government is today expected to introduce legislation allowing for independent civilian oversight of the RCMP.

The move follows recommendations in the Braidwood inquiry, which looked into the 2007 death of Robert Dziekanski.

Previously, the B.C. government has said it would establish an independent civilian agency to investigate police-related deaths and serious injuries.

It has said the agency would be led by a civilian who has never worked for police, and that it would have the authority to investigate the RCMP and municipal police.

Legislation is expected to be introduced this afternoon.
