The second Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) payment for the fiscal year, and the last of 2026, will arrive in bank accounts and mailboxes of qualifying Canadians as of Monday.
The benefit replaced the former GST credit in July of this year, and featured a bigger payment from the federal government designed to help millions of low and modest-income households keep up with the heightened cost of living, including to buy food and other essentials.
Payments are issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) every quarter, or every three months in a year, and are tax-free.
The final payment for this year is scheduled for Oct. 5.
Here’s how to know if you qualify and how much you could receive.
CGEB qualifications
In order to qualify for the CGEB, there are two foundational requirements that must first be met.
First, one must be a resident of Canada for tax purposes both in the month before the CRA makes a payment and at the start of the month when a payment is made.
For the payment expected on Monday, this means a recipient must have met the first qualification both in September and as of Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Second, recipients must also be at least 19 years of age, unless they have (or had) a spouse or common-law partner, or are (or were) a parent and live (or lived) with your child.
Once these two qualifications are met, the CRA will determine eligibility of payments and how much they will be based mostly on their declared incomes.
If an individual or household’s declared income is below the maximum income threshold, they typically will qualify for CGEB payments.
The 2025 maximum annual income level thresholds for a single person without children and single-parent families are as follows.
- With no children – $60,012
- With one child – $68,912
- With two children – $73,592
- With three children – $78,272
- With four children or more – $82,952
For married or common-law individuals to receive CGEB payments, the combined maximum income thresholds for the 2025 tax year are as follows.
- With no children – $64,232
- With one child – $68,912
- With two children – $73,592
- With three children – $78,272
- With four children or more – $82,952
The CRA says parents who are in a shared custody situation may be eligible for half of the CGEB payment for that child.
The agency also says it will only send out notices to individuals and families if they are entitled to receive the CGEB, either electronically through their online accounts, or by mail if they are not registered for CRA services online.
How much you could get
The amount one can receive for CGEB payments varies greatly depending on incomes and whether someone is single, married or in a common-law relationship, and if they have children.
The payment amounts are also updated every July, meaning the current payment cycle runs from July 2026 and June 2027, making the Oct. 5 payment the second of this cycle.
Some examples of payment amounts for qualifying recipients of the CGEB are as follows.
If a single individual with no children has a declared 2025 income of $11,564, they may receive up to $445 in the period between July 2026 and June 2027. Over the course of four quarterly payments, that works out to $111.25 each — including on Monday.
If a single individual with no children has a declared 2025 income of $55,000, the payment amount totals $250.60 over four payments. That works out to $62.65 per CGEB payment.
If a single individual has two children and a declared income in 2025 of $45,000 or less, they could receive $1,358 over four payments. That means four payments of $339.50, including on Monday.
For a married or common-law partnership with no children, if the combined household declared income is $46,432 or less, that household would receive $890 over the given period. That equals four quarterly payments of $222.50.
If a married or common-law partnership has one child, and a declared 2025 household income of $60,000, then they could receive $445.60 over four payments of $111.40. With three children, and the same income, that amount increases to $913.60, or four payments of $228.40.
To determine specific payment amounts, the CRA has a helpful calculator tool online.
In a Parliamentary Budget Officer’s report from earlier this year, it was determined the CGEB program could cost the federal government $12.4 billion over six years.
@Anonymous 1228 am. Of course there is a reduction in economic efficiency whenever government intervenes, save for a examples like taxing externalities or public healthcare which saves on administrative costs. But this is a small price to pay for a more equitable distribution of income.
@Arthur Harris 1149 pm. Respectfully, my point is there are people in my age cohort that get by with 25k per year. My family doesn’t get any benefits other than less than 10.00 a month for the Canadian Child Benefit. My family-mostly my wife who earns more-doesn’t complain about these transfers to lower income people or taxes. It’s our obligation to help those less lucky/advantaged than us.
Amazing, I love paying all these taxes and getting nothing in return.
Ben you are delusional. Studies have shown that redistribution gives back cents on the dollar from taxes collecting.
@Ben. Nobody can live on $25,000 per year in Canada. Glad they are not taxed, but taxes should be lowered for $100k and below.
@Anonymous 1052 pm. Taxing people earning very low incomes less won’t increase their income, because they don’t pay much income tax, if any. Reducing taxes for everyone doesn’t decrease inequality. The point to programs like this is to reduce inequality and help lift people out of poverty. Great examples of this are the Canadian Child Benefit, or the OAS/GIS. A tax cut isn’t a social program in my opinion.
Ben why can’t you address those comments saying that this collection and redistribution is inefficient and much is lost in administration. We should be taxed less so we keep more in our pocket. Is that the next idea Carney will steal from Pierre?
@Arthur Harris. Respectfully, redistribution of income is what is happening. Someone who makes 25,000 a year pays zero federal income tax and likely no Provincial income tax. This will greatly benefit them.
Canadians are taxed so horribly the Carney regime needs to give people crumbs to feed themselves. How sad is that.
My problem is this: This is still the GST Rebate.
Basic Tax theory:
Tax incomes.
Tax consumption.
Obviously GST is a consumption Tax. The more income you have, the more you are likely to spend. The less you make , the more of your income is spend on necessities.
In the name of fairness, an income based rebate is issued to those of lower incomes.
While I would encourage a wide spread discussion of what is a fair amount to receive, what is a fair cutoff income etc, I would not expect something like that on this forum.
Whatever the Liberals call it, it is still a GST rebate. And it is payed with Taxpayer money. If they felt they could get away with it they would call it THE GET MONEY FOR VOTING LIBERAL PAYMENT.
Who gets this…? Im a senior I get CPP/OAS and a small work pension and my husband in hospital because of stoke. I never got and benefit for food.
@Anonymous at 12:45. Regardless of her spelling error her statement is totally true.
Carney is giving out money like Santa Claise as he failed to lower grocery prices as per his promise to Canadians during the 2025 Election. This is an army that Carney didn’t deliver
@We’re done. Respectfully, assuming your parents are both 65 or older, they would, as a couple, earn more than 1200 per month with GIS and OAS. I agree the government should give more for those who don’t have CPP or a funded pension, but I would look into why they are making so little.
@P. Donovan. A person earning say 25,000.00 pays no federal tax and no or very little provincial income tax. Therefore a tax cut would not benefit them. This benefit given by the government is of greatest help to lower income people.
Wouldn’t it be preferred cost wise to lower the tax rate for those who qualify? No check issued,no employees to do the admin. Same thing with the lottery style paydays for people who have children that can’t afford to have them or have them in order to get a monthly of $679…wth?
Big gov. feels the need to have as many people dependent on them so they can feel important and hand out more prior to an election.Just cut or eliminate taxes instead.
My parents live on $1200/month, that’s all my father and mother get for 47 years of service to this country. I want people to look around them and take the rose glasses off for a moment, and take in the true state of this place. We are becoming an impoverished third-world country. You will not be able to afford fuel, electricity, groceries, rent, and absolutely forget house maintenance if you own your home due to the insane costs of construction and contractors. Take it all in.
12:46 “What does PP say?”
Ask Carney since he copies any ideas PP has.
Canada is a dumpster fire
What does PP say?
bwahahahaha
How about the cons get a real leader
Eloisa can’t even spell “usage” but there’s an expert for us.
@Ben. Homelessness and food bank usuage has exploded under the Trudeau/Carney regime
And the big box stores should be the ones paying this, their the ones causing it !!!!
Ben tax dollars that get put through the bureaucracy end up giving cents on the dollars. It would be far more efficient if we paid less tax to begin with.
Carney sure talks a good games, but has zero results to show for. He has been PM over 18 months so it is fair to criticize his zero progress or failed promises he made in 2025.
Here’s a wild idea, maybe stop taxing Canadians into poverty and they won’t depend on government handing out crumbs.
…and keep your grubby paws off our CPP!
These liberal handouts are wasting our money. I remember big talking Carny yammering on about lowering prices and making things more affordable. Wake up Canada. These liberals are the same people who got us into this mess. I love how Global always writes these types of articles with such a good spin on Carny and the liberals. Folks, Carny is never going to make things more affordable and he will buy your vote with hand outs while he sells off our country to the highest bidders, wasting tax dollars, talking with zero action and come election time these will still be issues. The liberal bought global and main stream media will applaud him for it and the sheep eat it up.
Thanks Carney my husband and I live on pensions and used to get a few dollars GST rebate but you upped the income for qualifying and now we get nothing just like most Canadians
Requiring to hand out the benefit shows the Liberals have failed. Champagne and Trudeau promised lower grocery prices by Thanksgiving 2023.
More handouts by Liberlas as Catney failed to keep a major election promise. He stated to judge him on grocery prices which he stated he would lower. Which he didn’t.
Transfers to individuals from government like this help bring people above the poverty rate. The child tax credit is another example which does this. While poverty rates are lower than when the Liberals came into power, a focus on increasing productivity and growth, building housing (Provincial responsibility) and eliminating inter Provincial barriers is required. Our growth and productivity stats are comparatively low and must be urgently addressed.
I see the usual crowd of azzholes are here, turning this site into a even greater farce. Only a few places remain for folks to comment and have a voice and there just hs to be these two bit bots, bullies and just plain aazzholes who make it difficult. Go F8ck yourselves. Canada is a sick sick nation of ignorant idiots, apathetic and pathetic. This, bordered by a nation led by a maniac and a commie who hs turned that placew into a damned ghetto!
I pick fights with multiple random strangers.
Anonymous is a village idiot….how about you take a break from monopolizing the comments and let the adults get a word in….dolt.
I identify as apart of the alphabet brigade and have multiple personalities inside me. How much do I get ? Oh ya, I identify as part indigenous.
I got my money today
And all the low intelligence socialist, nay communists, drool in approval of the noose that the liberal party is clearly tightening around their necks…in the name of compassion and inclusion of course
Please lower taxes instead of handouts Clowney.
Well said, Larry. 👍
Its crazy this money goes to ppl who don’t work instead of ppl that do. 🤔
Ahhh, those 30% of Canadians get their pittance while the rest of us continue to get nothing.
@Anonymous,
I’m not disagreeing, but Canadians are extremely complacent and this holds especially true when it comes to change. People would rather suffer the gradual cost of inaction, than risk losing their job or missing time at the workplace which they claim to hate.
Office workers and middle class professionals, for example, need to vacation at least twice per year and they must have new fancy cars every couple years, so they will never act. These were the people who came back into Canada during covid and told the health officers they just had seasonal allergies and infected their entire buildings. The working class are vulnerable and cannot risk job termination. The unionized cannot engage anything without having a beer or joint in their hand.
Ben you are full of it. Keep carrying water for the LPC. Truth taste good when its in a belly full of lies.
Ben
If you ever watch CBC CTV news you will never hear anything negative about Liberals and their policies and carney
Both gets huge amounts cash from federal government
Free food free housing free healthcare free drugs legal or not free childcare free free everything free except for the taxpayers
Thanks liberals
AND GROCERY STORES IMMEDIATELY UP PRICES.
REVOLUTION NOW!!! TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK FROM THESE LUNATIC, AUTHORITARIAN, COMMUNIST LUNATIC CLOWNS!!! THIS IS OUR COUNTRY AND IM ANGRY EVERYDAY SEEING THE COMPLETE DESTRUCTION THEY ARE CAUSING IN EVERYWAY!!!
This used to be called the GST Rebate but it was renamed. Why all of a sudden are bought media announcing EVERY government cheque like its a windfall? Anyone who received CPP, OAS, RRIFS or the old GST Rebate, know exactly when its deposited. But this makes newcomers and those elbows up idiots think this is new money.
@Tim 911 am. Canada has tax credits and support programs for journalism. It’s not the same thing as the government directly controlling or paying every media outlet. Proof of this can be seen by the constant attacks on Carney from the 60% US owned and republican connected newspaper chain.
I am hoping countries like Bangladesh, Uganda, Syria, etc start sending International Aid to Canada to help with the hungry and homeless
Like a good subsidized media company, they have orders from the Federal Government to report every wonderful amount of our tax money that the government gives back to us.
These amounts are NOT helping anyone. Better to save the 12 for more people who are desperate. What good can this mere pittance do for anyone?? This programme is strictly political.
I see censorship is still very rank. Comment after comment deleted because of truth. Truth of what the Liberals have done and are doing to Canada and Canadians. This is a political handout, a token pittance thrown to you all by a fascist corrupt government pushing this country into a fascist state we dont want.
If it helps some cool. But for the majority, they will be back at food banks next week.
Carney just does not get that nor care. He’s a corrupt fraud with an agenda that could turn deadly for Canada.
Canada is cooked.
Look for the comments where people are only slightly mad that they didnt get a bigger crumb. They are actually upset they dont get more problem.
What do they share?
They are over 65. They are east coasters.
These are the people that have ruined our country though selfish and short sighted voting.
Sent from the liberal government to top story news from the global propaganda machine!
what a rip off work hard and I get nothing “make to much” liberals voters screwed up the country!
Elbows Up Canadians sure have been hoodwinked by Mark Clowney. He has not fulfilled one election promise.

For the many times it entered the rational mind – those that need this rebate are oblivious to this funding arriving in their account anymore than it would go I deposited save for senior abuse etc.
I bet my grocery rebate would be larger if the government weren’t paying you to regurgitate public information
immigrnts are happy !
tax deducted from Canadians and money given to immigrnts ..
More and more immigrants promised to come to canada. More and more muzlim mouths to feed. More and more future extreemists. Burning Canadian flags with lighters and fluid bought on the taxpayer dime…
I see. I know. Alright. Fine. QkdnjkMandjzk2847+”!”
@vanessa Wong. Easy way to lower grocery prices… taxpayer funded handouts.
Didn’t Carney promise to lower grocery prices in 2025? What are his excuses for that.
Great , 2 tanks of gas
Last year I made $20,000 I get $149 grocery line sorry to complain again. I just don’t understand how somebody that works and a 25 years old gets 300 and something or my friend is on the same stuff as me at six something and I get 149 not right man we have to get the stuff figured out I make $20,000 a year. I can’t even survive Not that’s anybody’s fault except my own but you know I’m disabilities and I know I’m in a lot of distress and stuff.
This is a great plan.
First tax hardworking middle class to poorhouse then give them handouts and they will vote for liberals forever.
I was wondering why the new grocery allowance is $149 for someone that is on CPP disability and does not work and somebody that works about 26 years old gets 300 and something dollars how does that work? It’s not right something wrong can you please help me with this? Thank you Maureen Denney
The Carney propaganda machine that is Global is at it again. Telling us about something that happens which helps only a limited number of Canadians who have incomes that combined are a maximum of $64,000. Which is basically poverty level income given the cost of food, housing and utilities in this Carney economy.
I still marvel at the individual who told a cop to his face, on camera, that he would put him 6 feet under not being arrested on the spot.
Liberals used to support justice. Today, they support extremists likely to be imprisoned.
Carney does not fix what is wrong with the Liberal Party of Canada. He’s like a stained, smelly bandaid making making nurses and other medical professionals wince.
Obviously, Liberals support the terrorists more than peaceful Canadians.
Is it an appropriate time to note Albertan separatists have neither abducted, murdered, nor done anything but use legal means to express their contempt for Confederation?
To read the news, you’d think they had taken hostages, rather than sponsored a peaceful rally, or written an op-ed.
To be clear, the first Trudeau was alleged to have violated our rights and the purpose of the War Measures Act when responding to the murder of politicians by terrorists.
His idiot son, a prime example of how far the liberal party has fallen, violated our rights and abused the law because a protest they didn’t support went on longer than they had hoped when they did absolutely nothing to curtail it with appropriate legal mechanisms. In short, they tried nothing and were all out of ideas.
My apologies friends, the previous Trudeau violated our rights unduly with the War Measures Act, while his son did the same with the Emergencies Act.
Patterns in chaos, eh?
Too many of you, to use a US word, have been an embiggened sense of your intelligence exemplified by childish name calling in the absence of anything rational or meaningful to contribute to any discussion.
The most articulate among you are little more than cheerleaders.
Right? Before Liberals:
Gas cost ~$1. Peaked to all time highs under the Liberals and currently stands at $2.089 average across the country. It’s peak was in 2022.
We had the best trade deal in the world and were the US’ largest trading partner and loyal ally. Today, Mexico has overtaken us (2023), and if our disagreements are not resolved, the trade deal is dead.
Immigration fraud, and terrorists flooded our country as Liberals believe Canada is “post-national”, and has no identifiable culture.
In doing so, they drove up the cost of housing, education, and everyday services because, apparently, arithmetic doesn’t apply to good intentions.
We claim now, to be a country that committed genocide without evidence or trial. Right or wrong, I am going to suggest that tarnished Canada rather than improved our reputation.
Liberals enacted the Emergencies Act, created after they abused the Martial Act, and were found to have abused the purpose of the Emergencies, violated our constitutional right, again.
All of this in a little over a decade. Re-elected by, alleged Canadians to serve a generation.
“Freedom is never more than a generation from extinction.”
Ronald Reagan (aka: why Canada ever had tariff free trade with the US).
Only irrational people support the liberal party.
They are doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.
The result is always the same: Canadians lose faith in Canada and start calling for separation.
Oh, and I might add, blaming everyone but themselves as they reverse or correct for their terrible policy.
Right Ben? We do not laud the criminal when they stop committing crimes after being caught, do we?
We try them, and if found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, we take away their basic rights to freedom by incarcerating them.
We don’t say, oh, the Liberals should be lauded for increasing the number of people dependant on food banks after they realized their policies impoverished people and slowly and begrudgingly start reversing course too late.
That’s liberal nonsense.
And they brag about it in the House of Commons. The fact that so many depend on these handouts should tell everyone about the state of this country. Thank liberal voters.
Ben, we do not laud the people whose actions precipitated the very need for the intervention.
That would be a race to the bottom.
What we do, is hold people accountable for their failures and not act like the sky is falling because someone got fired for not being the right fit.
Governance is not about emotion – and no – governance would not be improved by incorporating emotion.
Emotion breeds bias which leads to the dark side.
The need for it is due to over ten years of failed Liberal policies.
And if you think they are not failed policies, ask yourself: why are Liberals promoting their reversal?
Make no mistake, Liberal investments go bankrupt, just like their ideologies.
We are going to be removed from the G7 if we do not remove liberal politicians from power everywhere they hold onto it.
I’m glad people less fortunate obtain this benefit. The need for it is clear with the war in Iran further driving up inflation. The Carney government should be lauded here.
12.4b for a needless band aid. Where would these people be without the aid?..we would think the same spot they are now.
How about some real news, like about testimony of covid shot injuries and fatalities as per the recent Alison Inquiry.
Hurray! a few cumbs while Carney spends this much on breakfast in a single day.
Because:
1. Liberals tax us too much and this is how they return the overtaxation; and,
2. Renamed to reflect the reality that food and necessities are out of reach for too many Canadians.
Liberals stupidly want to increaee immigration, and, I think, Canada could be advertised as a country to move to if you want to lose weight.
Pretty sad that Canada has come to this. Depending on the government to hand out money so people can buy food. Thanks Liberals.
More crumbs to Elbows Up Canadians
