Liberals balk at immediate leadership vote

OTTAWA – The president of the Liberal Party says the last thing shell-shocked federal Liberals want is an immediate leadership contest.

Alf Apps said he’s consulted with the party’s provincial and territorial wings and its various commissions and that view is unanimous.

He says the consensus is that the party should hold a policy convention in December, then a leadership contest sometime after that.

Montreal MP Denis Coderre says the party needs to conduct a thorough post-mortem to learn why the Liberals were reduced to a mere 34 seats .

After that, he says, the party needs to rebuild its finances, structure and policies before choosing a successor to Michael Ignatieff.

Coderre also says Toronto MP Bob Rae should be named interim leader for two years.

Other Liberals have mused about Saskatchewan MP Ralph Goodale but Coderre said the interim leader needs to be bilingual, which Goodale is not.
