The remains of Jolene Riendeau were discovered under a bridge along Highway 15 near Nuns’ Island on September 9, 2010, Montreal police said Monday.
The remains were found by a man, but police did not give any other details.
The area where they were found is accessible to a bike path.
"Were they found in a blanket or a bag? That’s information we want to keep for ourselves," Sargeant Ian Lafreniere told Global reporter Domenic Fazioli.
Police would not say how long the remains were in that area.
They may have been there since the girl’s disappearance in 1999, or they may have been moved from another location.
Riendeau’s remains were found about three kilometres from where the girl was last seen alive.
Witnesses saw the girl eating a bag of chips on April 12, 1999 outside a convenience store in Point St-Charles, corner of Knox and Charlevoix streets.
Police announced the discovery of her remains last Wednesday, May 4.
A 47-year-old suspect was arrested a few days later, on Friday, May 6.
He was released over the weekend, but police say the investigation is not over.
"We’re hoping for another tip from the public," Lafreniere said. "He’s still considered our number one suspect."
Earlier Monday, Jolene’s family placed flowers at the site of her remains.
They have so far refused to grant interviews.
