REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders football club is among 36 different businesses and organizations seeking a property tax exemption this year from the City of Regina.

The community-owned CFL team, which has been receiving a tax break since 1989, wants more than $55,000 in exemptions for various properties around the city.

The request comes after the club turned a profit of $5.6 million over the last two years and at a time when Regina property owners are facing their highest tax increase in more than a decade.

Exemptions are granted every year, primarily to government-owned properties, some community and non-profit organizations, schools and churches.

They can also be granted as a development incentive, but City Coun. Wade Murray says it’s time for a review of who wants exemptions, including the Riders.

The largest exemptions on the 2014 list are for the Regina Airport Authority and the RCMP Heritage Centre, which are seeking to have more than $551,000 in property taxes forgiven.
