Global Maritimes welcomes Ron Kronstein as new Senior Anchor

HALIFAX, June 8, 2011 – Global Maritimes is pleased to announce the return of Ron Kronstein to the region as its new Senior Anchor.

This appointment marks the beginning of the largest expansion of news gathering capability in the history of Global Maritimes as well as the re-launch of Global Maritimes’ Evening News programs. Kronstein takes his place behind the anchor desk as host of both the New Brunswick Evening News and the Nova Scotia Evening News, which make their debut on Global Maritimes channels on Monday, June 13 at 6pm AT.

“I always hoped I’d have an opportunity to return to the Maritimes, and I can’t think of a better way to come back home” said Ron Kronstein. “The Global Maritimes team is a close-knit group of professionals that is focused on providing a clear and concise approach to the news. I’m proud to be working with them and look forward to rekindling old friendships and making new ones.”

A veteran reporter, producer and anchor, Kronstein brings more than 25 years of television experience to the Global Maritimes family, 20 of those years having been spent in the Maritimes, where he covered many of the biggest stories of the past decades.

Kronstein began his broadcast career in radio and television in Ontario and made his first move to Halifax in 1983 as an anchor and producer for ASN News, where he worked for 12 years.

After a stint at a Winnipeg television station, Ron returned in 1998 to anchor and co-host at ATV. Most recently, Ron served his country in the Canadian Forces, where he helped oversee communications strategy for the military as an Army public affairs officer.

With his substantial background in news and public service, Kronstein brings to Global Maritimes an unparalleled pedigree, as well as an established fan base and keen understanding of the issues affecting Maritimers.

“We are thrilled to be introducing an anchor who has a thorough understanding of all three Maritime provinces. Ron has a great reputation for getting to the bottom of a story and viewers will remember him as someone who has always kept their interests first,” said Troy Reeb, Vice President, Global News, Shaw Media.

“We’re heading into the most exciting period of growth in the history of Global Maritimes. Not only are we introducing a brand new anchor, but we’re also investing heavily in new reporters, resources and programming,”

As part of the changes announced for June 13, Global Maritimes reporter Marie Adsett moves to the anchor chair to helm Global Maritimes’ hour-long News Final program at 11pm weeknights, while anchor/reporter Rebecca Lau will take over responsibility as anchor of the Weekend News while continuing to report during the week.

By the end of the year, Global Maritimes will also launch a new Maritime-based morning news program that will completely re-energize morning news in the region and give viewers a unique, home-grown news product designed to provide them with the key information they need to start their day.

This major investment by Shaw Media in the news gathering ability of Global Maritimes and GlobalMaritimes.ca is designed to better provide viewers with timely and accurate news as it happens.

To help produce this expanded news content, more than a dozen reporters, producers and video journalists will be hired to bolster existing Global Maritimes’ news staff currently based in Halifax, Sydney, Moncton, Fredericton and Saint John.
