One of Manitoba’s most popular parks, Birds Hill, will be undergoing a major makeover over the next five years, as the government announced the largest single-park investment in its $100 million investment in Manitoba’s parks.
An estimated 730,000 people visit Birds Hill Park every year, making it the busiest spot in Manitoba’s park system.
“The park is crowded on hot days in the summer and there’s not enough space on the beach for everyone, so we need to create new beach spaces,” said Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie.
Premier Greg Selinger was on-hand at Birds Hill Park to make the funding announcement Monday morning.
“It’s a $22 million investment over the next five years, and it will allow many more Mnaitobans to come out and enjoy the beautiful park,” he said.
Selinger also added many of the updated and new facilities will feature green technology.
The redevelopment plan includes:
* Expanding the campground to include approximately 100 new fully serviced campsites, modern washrooms and new play areas;
* Expanding the existing lake and beach area to accommodate more visitors;
* Expanding and improving beach amenities such as new concessions and play areas, new beach volleyball and tennis courts, additional picnic areas and pathway connections, and new washrooms;
* Constructing a new visitor centre, which will welcome people to Birds Hill Park and introduce visitors to the recreational and educational opportunities within the park and offer information about the Manitoba provincial park system; and
* Upgrading roadways and buildings.
The cost for the Birds Hill Provincial Park redevelopment is estimated at $22 million over the five-year period.
