REGINA – Renovations of Lawson Aquatic Centre have been approved, but won’t be complete until September.

$1.5-million in reserve funding will cover installation of a UV filtration system meant to neutralize chloramines in the water.

An air quality advisory has been in place at the 39-year-old facility for three months, after reports of swimmers getting sick began to surface following a mechanical failure in March 2013.

Despite this, representatives from Regina Optimist Dolphins Swim Club say they’re happy to put a dark time at Lawson behind them.

“The biggest meet we’ve hosted in years, if not longer, didn’t go that well because all these clubs vowed to not come back until we fix the pool,” said James Korpan. “The pool is now going to be fixed, we can welcome them back and be proud of our facility.”

City staff say the improvements will extend the life of Lawson Aquatic Centre until 2025.
