A tropical cyclone that formed in the Mozambique Channel off the coast of Africa continues to produce heavy rainfall.

Tropical Cyclone Guito was producing rainfall of about 50 mm an hour, with the bulk of it falling in the channel. Lighter rain was falling on Madagascar’s west coast.

NASA’s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite captured the heavy rainfall.

The cyclone’s maximum sustained winds are near 120.4 km/h, equivalent to a Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, which measures hurricanes in the northern hemisphere and ranges from Category 1 (weakest) to Category 5 (strongest).

The storm is moving southeast at about 18 km/h, into the Southern Indian Ocean, where cooler waters will start to weaken it.
