Reginans enjoy Family Day outside

REGINA – Warmer temperatures encouraged Reginans to take to the ice, hills, and museums to enjoy Saskatchewan’s eighth annual Family Day holiday.

“They’re having fun. There’s a lot of activities and stuff for them to do. They made masks and dinosaurs and came out to try the snowshoeing,” said Brandi Windigo, as her two children went snowshoeing at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum this afternoon.

The museum also offered scavenger hunts, Aboriginal storytelling, and other activities for visitors.

Other families spent the day enjoying dog sled demos, crafts, and other activities at the RCMP Heritage Centre for its “Arctic Adventures” program.

The warmer temperatures also encouraged hundreds to visit the Victoria Park skating rink throughout the day.

One of the more eye-catching activities came courtesy of Toboggarama. Over the weekend, several people created colourful toboggans using duct tape, leftover wood – essentially any materials they could find. Today, participants raced their contraptions on Wascana Hill.

“Originally, there was a stainless steel fridge door that we used we found at CMS,” said J.J. Heisler in front of his helicopter-looking toboggan. “We just started screwing it together, and this is what we made. They told us to bring our A-game, and we brought it.”

Today was also try-out day for female football players hoping to get a spot on the Regina Riot team.

“Stay in shape and get something to be pumped up for because, you know, game day; what’s better than game day?” said Danielle Petersen. “This is my first year in Regina. My family doesn’t live in Regina, so it would be nice to have that group to rely on.”

It wasn’t all fun and games for some; federal government employees didn’t have the day off because Family Day isn’t a federal holiday.
