Pasqua, Echo Lakes expected to peak

Residents of the small peaceful community of Bence Beach along Pasqua Lake are wondering how much longer they will have to deal with rising flood waters, even as the river is expected to peak.

“The water is absolutely horrible,” Dwayne Czemeres said. “It’s four feet in my garage. Everything I have in the garage is flooded.”

Since last weekend water has been spilling into the tiny community near Fort Qu’Appelle. Now, the town has become part of the lake.

Residents are being forced to rely on their quads and to reach their homes.

For those who have lived in the area for a while, they say they have never seen the water this high.

“I’d say it’s a foot, foot and a half, higher than 1974,” longtime resident Bruce Hollerbaum said.

Unfortunately for Hollerbaum and his neighbours, they did not have enough to time finish flood preparations.

“About a week ago we started sandbagging and we figured it was lots, according to what it was going to rise.”

On Saturday the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority said these are the highest levels ever recorded in the area. Another 12 cm of water was expected before the rivers peaked.

The water will now wind its way through Mission and Katepwa Lakes. Those residents are now on stand by as they wait for the water to peak there early this week.
