PENTICTON — It was only a garage fire, but it attracted a serious response from the Penticton fire department Monday morning.

Off-duty and volunteer firefighters were called in to help battle the flames on Holden Road, off of Carmi Avenue.

The detached garage was about 25 feet away from the house, so crews had to act quickly to contain the flames.

A pick-up truck was fully engulfed inside the garage.

Penticton Fire Chief, Wayne Williams, says this was a dangerous blaze because there were hazardous materials inside the garage.

There were a couple of small explosions, possibly caused by paint and trucks’ tires.

A father and son were home at the time, luckily, no one was injured.

Fire officials say the blaze was accidentally, and was likely caused by a wood stove. But due to the extent of the damage, they cannot be certain.

Fire Chief Williams says the owner had gone inside his home to eat lunch, leaving the wood stove unsupervised.

Williams says wood stoves are not dangerous if they are installed properly and only used within their recommended lifespan.
