PEACHLAND — It was supposed to be a day of quality father-daughter time, when the unthinkable happened.

Barry Adam took his daughter Jessica on a side-by-side (UTV) Saturday afternoon.

It was a trail Adam knew well near Darke Lake area in Peachland, but this time, he ventured out further than usual.

“We got into some deep snow, and I guess it was too much for the UTV,” says Adam. “I smelled that burning smell — which nobody wants to smell — and then the belt gave up.”

He only had to walk for about 15 minutes to get service. Using GPS, he was able to tell his family where they were located.

West Kelowna RCMP were dispatched, but they were no match for the snow.

Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) were called to help. Two snowmobile teams were sent out to find the pair.

After waiting for five hours, the Adams were rescued shortly after 10 p.m.

“It turned out okay in the end, but I wouldn’t want to repeat it,” says Adam.

The pair did not suffer any injuries.
