REGINA – Saskatchewan has released its list for top baby names in the province for 2013 and for the second straight year Emma is leading the way for girls and Liam is the most popular name for boys.

In 2013, 92 baby boys were named Liam followed by Carter, Noah, Lucas and Ethan. Ethan was the most popular boys name for eight years from 2001 to 2009.

80 baby girls were given the name Emma in 2013 followed by Sophia, Emily, Olivia and Lily.

The method for choosing names seems to range from TV shows to simplicity.

“(One daughter’s name) is from The Bachelor, (the other) off of a kids’ show,” said one parent.

“I wanted something that wasn’t hard to spell because I always had problems spelling my name,” a Regina mother said.

“We chose (biblical) names for meaning and because they’re names we liked,” said another parent.

2013 was a little too early for babies to be born following the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ Grey Cup victory – so “Darian” (Riders’ QB Durant) wasn’t near the top of the list, though “Weston” (former Riders’ WR Dressler) was used by a handful of parents.

In 2013 there were 15,222 babies born in Saskatchewan, 176 more than 2012.
