SASKATOON – A long-standing Saskatoon grocery store is closing its doors in two months.

Come April 5, the Safeway at 8th Street and Cumberland will be out of business.

There will be no impact on workers. All 70 employees will be offered comparable jobs at other Safeway locations.

With the store’s lease set to expire and the cost associated with upgrading the building, the company says it makes sense to close this location.

As part of Sobeys $5.8 billion deal to buy Canada Safeway, Canada’s competition bureau has ordered Sobeys to sell 23 stores across the country, including the Safeway at the Centre Mall.
