A power outage over the weekend caused big problems at the Calgary airport, and it happened just as people around the world were flipping off the lights for Earth Hour.
The outage began at 7:45 Saturday night. Enmax says it happened because of a faulty cable that served a number of customers in north east Calgary including the airport.
When the emergency backup system didn’t start working, the runway lights went dark. No planes were allowed to take off or land during the blackout, diverting some packed planes to Edmonton.
The airport says it was completely coincidental the outage happened during Earth Hour.
Airport officials say they have no idea why the system failed – and say it could take a few days to isolate and fix the problem.
