MONTREAL – A woman is fighting for her life after being hit by a car as she crossed a street in Montreal on Wednesday morning.

Montreal police spokesperson Daniel Lacoursière said that the incident took place at 6:40 a.m., as the pedestrian was heading west across Autoroute Louis-H.-Lafontaine.

According to witnesses at the scene, she crossed at a red light and an oncoming car could not swerve in time to avoid her.

The woman was transported to hospital. Police said that she was in critical condition and suffered a major trauma.

Lacoursière said he could not confirm her identity.

The driver was also transferred to hospital to be treated for shock.

Police have cordoned off the area, and traffic is being diverted.
