HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government is looking to add 23 new parcels of land throughout the province to its growing list of protected wilderness areas.

The provincial government says it acquired the land over the past four years for conservation purposes from landowners, forestry companies and the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

The government says Nova Scotians will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed additions until June 24.

Once approved, the government says the new land will add 5,000 hectares to existing wilderness areas.

That would bring the amount of legally protected land in Nova Scotia up to 8.7 per cent from 8.6 per cent.

Under the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act, the province hopes to protect 12 per cent of its land by 2015.
