UPDATE: No insurance for Keremeos fire victim

KEREMEOS – The owner of a Similkameen business destroyed by fire vows to continue working from her home.

The blaze broke out at about 1:30 a.m. Monday in a commercial building in downtown Keremeos.

The building was damaged to the point it had to be demolished with heavy equipment.

Jennifer Montgomery had opened her dog grooming business, Paw Spa, just two months ago.

“It’s devastating,” says Montgomery. “We were going to get insurance as soon as I started making money.”

She says she put almost $17,000 into starting up her business.

Now Montgomery will restart from scratch, working out of her home.

“All I need are a pair of clippers and a sink.”

The cause of the fire is not considered suspicious.

Structure fires in Keremeos have been keeping crews busy.

On Saturday night, fire ripped through several vacant apartment units atop The Riverbed & Bistro Restaurant.

The cause of that fire remains under investigation.
