Toque Tuesday hopes to raise awareness of homeless issues in Montreal

MONTREAL – On Toque Tuesday, Montrealers are encouraged to help the homeless, one toque at a time.

By buying a toque, the funds will go towards Raising the Roof, a charitable organization that works to find solutions to help Canada’s homeless.

By wearing a toque, organizers hope to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness across Canada.

In Montreal, two local organizations, Spectre de rue and L’Itinéraire, will be selling toques on Tuesday at the McGill metro station from 8 to 10 am and 4 to 6 pm, at the Berri-UQAM metro station (St. Denis exit) from 8:30 am to 3 pm and at the Gare centrale from 1 to 3 pm.

People are also encouraged to donate new toques, winter shoes or boots, winter coats, warm socks and of course, money.

Toque Tuesday is also supported by Intact Insurance, who help create employment opportunities for previously homeless or vulnerable youth. Company employees also contribute their time to help raise much-needed dollars through the toque campaign.

Over the past 17 years, the annual campaign organized by Raising the Roof has raised over $3.5 million:

• 80% of net proceeds from the toque campaign benefit local partner organizations and help homeless people in cities and towns across Canada

• 20% of net proceeds supports Raising the Roof’s national homeless initiatives, like Child and Family Homelessness and Youthworks.
