ST. ANDREWS, Man. – Floodwater levels from the surging Red River have receded, prompting residents to return home to survey damage to their properties.
Officials in St. Andrews, Man., lifted evacuation notices for neighbourhoods near the Red River Sunday, after water levels fell more than one foot overnight, a significant drop likely caused by a moving ice jam.
On Saturday, the flood claimed its first victim, a 61-year-old Niverville, Man. resident who was swept away while trying to drive across a flooded road in his truck.
RCMP underwater recovery teams located the man’s body in a rural area Saturday afternoon.
The victim’s name has not been released. Police say nobody else was in the vehicle and no other vehicles were involved in the fatality.
