TTC to consider time-based transfers at board meeting next week

TORONTO – The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will consider a report next week at its board meeting to possibly introduce a time-based transfer system.

The TTC currently offers continuous-trip transfers which allows commuters to travel between streetcars, buses, or subways, but must pay again if they step off the system.

The time-based transfer would allow anyone to hop on and off public transit vehicles multiple times within a specified period such as 90 minutes or two hours.

The report states the new system would cost an estimated $20 million a year in lost revenue for a 120 minute transfer and $12 million for a 90 minute transfer.

The losses would be offset once the PRESTO Farecard system is finally rolled out.

The TTC is currently running a time-based transfer pilot project on the 512 St. Clair streetcar which it plans to end in 2015 if the proposal is not adopted.

Time-based transfers already operate in a number of public transportation systems across North America.
