Neighbour can’t forget screams of mom digging critically injured boy out of snow

WINNIPEG – Rebecca Hall says she can’t sleep because she can still hear the screams of her neighbour frantically digging for her son after he was buried in snow.

The nine-year-old boy was playing in the snow in his front yard at about 8 p.m. Wednesday when a snowbank collapsed on him. He’s listed in critical condition in a Winnipeg hospital.

Hall, 23, was upstairs in her family’s Fort Richmond home, watching TV, when she first heard the screaming.

She ran outside in her pyjamas and saw her next-door neighbour digging in the snow.

“She kept screaming, ‘Don’t let my boy die, don’t let him die,’ “ Hall said Friday.

Hall yelled for her mom to call 911 and several other neighbours came out to help.

Cathy and Tom Kinsman, who also live next door, said the boy was in waist-deep, heavy snow. When he was freed, they carried him into the house and started chest compressions.

His family has lived in their home for at least a year but are relatively new to Canada, their neighbours said.

“He is a beautiful boy,” Cathy Kinsman said. “He was doing really well at school, at learning English; he loved the snow.”

Police were canvassing the neighbourhood on Friday morning.

Neighbours said others should consider this a reminder to keep an eye on children when they’re playing outside.

“I can’t sleep,” Hall said. “I can still hear her screaming.”
