TORONTO – The Chicago Sun-Times is taking its website high-tech next month, testing out a paywall that would allow readers to pay for content with Bitcoin or by tweeting.

On February 1, readers will be given the option to donate Bitcoins or prove that they have tweeted about nonprofit organization The Taproot Foundation to gain access to Sun-Times content.

All proceeds will go to The Taproot Foundation, which helps get professionals pro bono work opportunities with other nonprofit organizations.

Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer (P2P) technology to operate without using banks and is not produced by a government or backed by a national currency.

The paywall will only be operational for 24 hours, but it will make The Sun-Times the first media outlet to have a Bitcoin paywall.

“We continue to experiment and test new technologies that we believe engage our readers and look forward to being the first major USA newspaper to test a Bitcoin-based paywall,” said editor-in-chief Jim Kirk in a press release.
