Wintry weather has forced several flights bound for Winnipeg to land in Brandon, instead.
Airport manager Tim Sanderson told Global News Wednesday that four aircraft were currently waiting out the winter storm at Brandon’s Municipal Airport.
The diverted aircraft included an Air Canada Airbus A320. AC flight 261 from Toronto to Winnipeg was supposed to land in Winnipeg around noon but high winds and blowing snow forced the aircraft to circle Winnipeg for almost an hour, then divert to Brandon, an Air Canada spokesman told Global News. Brandon is about 215 km west of Winnipeg. There were also smaller aircraft diverted to Brandon belonging to Calm Air and Perimeter Aviation.
Sanderson said Brandon has played host to diverted aircraft in the past, but this many at once is “unusual.”
Jean Marc Champagne, a passenger on board the Air Canada flight told Global News the 68 passengers were kept on the plane as it sat on the tarmac at Brandon. Air Canada said it hoped the aircraft could continue its journey to Winnipeg “as soon as possible.”
