One woman got more than just a date with a man she hooked up with through an online service – he stole her car at the end of their meeting.
Vancouver police are asking for the public’s help to locate 36-year-old Thomas James Newman, who is wanted on a warrant for theft over $5,000.
On Jan. 9, Newman allegedly met a woman through an online dating site and the two arranged a date. At the end of the date, Newman is alleged to have stolen the woman’s car. He has a history of past theft-related offences: In September 2010 he was charged with theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property.
Police are investigating at least five additional theft reports involving a man who dupes unsuspecting women into going on dates before he steals their valuables at the first opportunity.
Police are warning users of online dating sites to be cautious of who they are meeting up with and to arrange to meet in a public place until you get to know one another well.
Anyone who knows Newman’s whereabouts is asked to contact police.
