A Vulcan man is mystified after part of his family’s history was discovered on the other side of the world.
“Down at the bottom I found this letter,” said Australian Tim Lacey, of the trunk he bought. “It was just there, so what do you do? The letter has a letter head on it of the Vulcan Supply Company.”
It’s the sort of story that seems more like fiction than fact.
“Tim basically found this old letter in a trunk and saw that it came from Vulcan, he had no idea where Vulcan was,” said Jon Allan of the Vulcan Businesses Development Society, and Lacey’s primary contact regarding the letter.
“The timing was kind of interesting as well because it was almost 94 years to the day the letter itself was written,” added Allan.
A decades old letter in pristine condition, found in Balaklava, South Australia, returned to the grandson of its author, Violet Collier.

“He said do you have any relatives by the name Violet or Geoff Collier?” said Violet’s grandson, David Collier. “I immediately said Violet was my grandmother, but who the heck is Geoff?”
That question is the first of many missing pieces from this puzzling family letter.
“This letter is totally out of character for my grandmother,” added Collier.
Branching out to other members of the Collier family tree, David began to fill in the gaps.
“As it turns out my grandmother called grandpa, Geoff, even though everybody else I know called him Joe.”
Not only does the letter give the Colliers a look into their family history, it also gives the town and it’s residents a look at their past.
“It is a piece of Vulcan history,” said Collier.
Another page in the history books for the Vulcan Colliers, but there’s still one part of the mysterious letter that remains unanswered.
“No one knows Mrs. Schultz,” said Collier, of the woman his grandmother wrote to.
Collier says he plans to donate the letter to the Vulcan Historical Society, and says he also plans to contact Tim, in Australia.
