Five hours after an RCMP manhunt for an armed suspect triggered a shelter-in-place advisory for parts of Cold Lake, Alta., the advisory was lifted on Monday afternoon.
“RCMP have conducted an extensive search and no longer believe the suspect is in the area,” police said in a news release issued just before 1 p.m. local time.
“The reported firearm has been recovered by police.”
Shortly before 8 a.m., the RCMP issued the shelter-in-place advisory, saying they were investigating reports of an armed suspect on the loose in the area of Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake.
The order affected people living north of Kingsway, west of 62nd Street, south of Township Road 632 and east of Range Road 424. It also impacted the Cold Lake Golf and Country Club.
Area residents were asked to stay in their homes, lock their doors and to call 911 if they saw any suspicious people.
The RCMP said officers with its detachments in both Cold Lake and Bonnyville were involved in the manhunt.
Police said the suspect is about six feet tall and was reportedly wearing a black hat, a white-and-black shirt and blue jeans.
Cold Lake is located about 300 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
