A 41-year-old man has been charged in connection with the killing of another man at the Edmonton Corn Maze on Tuesday night.
The RCMP said police officers were called about a stabbing at about 7 p.m., at the corn maze on Highway 627 near Range Road 262 on the southwestern outskirts of Edmonton.
Police said an adult victim was found dead when officers arrived.
The suspect remained at the scene and was taken into custody. Police said the suspect and the victim knew each other. Details about the victim’s identity have not been released by police.
On Wednesday afternoon, the RCMP said the man who was killed was 53-year-old Joseph Farnsworth. Michael George Ferzli has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the killing.
Ferzli is scheduled to appear in court in Stony Plain, Alta., on Sept. 4.
In a statement, the Edmonton Corn Maze said it has been a beloved destination for families and takes pride in being a place where lasting memories are made.
“Our hearts are with the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time. We also extend our deepest concern and support to our staff and guests who have been affected by this tragic event,” the statement read.
“We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the emergency responders who acted swiftly and with the utmost professionalism.”
The statement said the corn maze will reopen “in the near future.”
The Alberta RCMP major crimes unit has now taken over the homicide investigation.
Anyone who was at the corn maze between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday is asked to call the Parkland RCMP at 825-220-7267.
