CALGARY – Family are grieving after a young man seriously injured in a four-car crash on New Year’s Day succumbed to his injuries.
Ramil ‘Francis’ Pesa, 20, died in hospital on Monday after a collision on Metis Trail on January 1, 2014.
His car was hit by a Dodge Ram that crossed the centre line on Metis Trail between 80th Avenue and Country Hills Boulevard.
Pesa was driving with his girlfriend beside him in the vehicle. He was taken to hospital in critical life-threatening condition, while his girlfriend suffered minor injuries.
Pesa leaves behind a large extended family, who was praying for his recovery.
“I still can’t take this in, it’s still processing,” explains cousin Kaesha Adolfo. “Honestly, I haven’t cried it out yet. It’s still sinking in.”
Family say Pesa had just returned from a month-long trip to the Philippines, where he helped victims of Typhoon Haiyan.
The driver of the Dodge Ram, a 36-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.
Police charged Kulwinder Singh Chohan with impaired driving, impaired driving over 0.08 and impaired driving causing injury.
Officials say these charges are likely to be upgraded to impaired driving causing death.
