Ferry passenger faces charges for drug possession

A 31-year-old man is facing charges after he was arrested at the Departure Bay ferry terminal with one-and-a-half kilos of cocaine and heroin.

Nanaimo RCMP arrested him as he walked off a BC Ferry Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Police searched the man and his belongings and discovered one kilogram of heroin and half a kilogram of cocaine.

Police are recommending charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking and a charge of obstruction, which stems from the suspect providing a false name to officers.

In a press release Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said: “This individual has been on our radar for some time and his arrest is the culmination of weeks of work by our drug members. Taking these drugs off the streets of Nanaimo is significant and will definitely have an impact at least in the short term on the drug scene in and around Nanaimo.”

The man will appear in court April 12.
