HALIFAX – Dozens of people flying out of Halifax Stanfield International Airport have been stranded by cancellations and weather delays, some for as long as several days.

WestJet officials told passengers on cancelled flights Tuesday morning it would be hours before a plan would be made to get them to their destinations, leaving them in a state of limbo.

Pearson International Airport in Toronto experienced a number of cancellations, causing most of the airport to shut down and massive delays for people trying to get back to the city.

Liam Owens has already spent four days at the Halifax airport.

He went home to St. John’s for Christmas and said he has faced several cancellations already.

“It’s been chaotic,” he said. “I’m dealing with Air Canada and they can’t even put me up in a hotel. They can’t give me cab fare.”

So far, Owens has nearly spent the same amount as his ticket price on accommodation.

Airport officials in Halifax have been trying to help out passengers with pets and babies by giving them food and diapers, but until weather conditions clear in other areas, they say it remains unclear how long travelers may be stuck.
