One man is dead and another was hospitalized with serious injuries due to a four-vehicle crash at Dugald Road and the Perimeter Highway early Tuesday.
RM of Springfield fire chief Brian Seaton said his crews were called to the scene just after 12:30 a.m., where Winnipeg firefighters had also been dispatched.
Seaton told Global Winnipeg that three pickup trucks and a semi-trailer were involved in the crash.
“Currently, we’ve got one major injury and one fatality at the present time,” Seaton said.
“We’re still gathering information — the analyst has been here gathering information, that’s why the highway has been shut down.”
The province reopened the roads just before 8 a.m.
According to Manitoba RCMP, the incident appears to have taken place when a westbound pickup truck on Highway 15 made contact with another westbound pickup, causing the first truck to lose control and crash into the side of the semi, which was stopped at a red light on the Perimeter.
The contact between the two pickups, police said, led to a third collision, with another pickup headed in the same direction.
The driver of the first pickup, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead on scene, while the driver of the second pickup, also in his 20s, was taken to hospital in Winnipeg with serious injuries. The driver of the third truck was treated and released at the scene, while the semi driver, 69, wasn’t hurt in the incident.
RCMP continue to investigate.
