FREDERICTON – Freezing rain across Eastern Canada forced nearly 800 plane passengers to be diverted to Fredericton Monday.

David Innes, the president of the Fredericton International Airport Authority, says most of the flights were headed to Montreal with passengers returning from vacations in the Caribbean.

Innes says the flights included three CanJet flights carrying about 190 people each, which arrived around 3 a.m.

Anne-Sophie Tetreault of Montreal says she was mad and frustrated with the way passengers were treated.

She says they had to sit on their plane outside the Fredericton terminal for six hours until customs staff arrived.

Tetreault, who was returning from Cuba with her mother and three children, says they were told the flight crew had reached their maximum hours and could not fly them to Montreal.

CanJet did not return calls for comment.

Innes says most of the flights have since left Fredericton.
