MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Dozens of mourners gathered at a church in Mississauga for the funeral of a 14-month-old girl who died after an incident at a home daycare.
Steven Nguyen, a member of the church, says the intimate ceremony was solemn and "emotional."
Duy-An Nguyen was taken to hospital last Wednesday and taken off life support two days later.
The daycare operator, April Luckese, 35, has been charged with second-degree murder in the baby’s death.
Luckese is in protective custody until her next court date on Jan. 21.
Child care advocates and the Ontario Federation of Labour are calling for a coroner’s inquest to investigate the girl’s death.
They also want a probe into what they say are failures in Ontario’s child care system.
The groups say long waiting lists for licensed child care in Ontario force parents to use unlicensed and unregulated facilities.
